| | Getting Ready For Spring | | Well at the store Sunday I bought my seeds and seed starter pots for some of my gardening. Attatched is a photo of these items. I bought, cucumebrs, zuchinni, green beans, yellow beans, sweet banana peppers, and cauliflower. This is just the start for my garden. Most other things I plant outdoors after threat of frost passes. These all start as seedlings. Still have to get some tomato seeds as well. Do you start things indoors for your garden as well? When do you plant outdoors? Most time I get things in the ground mid to late May at the earliest due to the frost etc here in Minnesota.

| My first seedling has sprouted! | | The picture is very blurry (it's so small I has to get really close with the camera) but you can see my first seedling in the picture attached. It is a chilli plant of an Italian variety called "Satan's Kiss", which despite the name apparently produces chilli's that are only medium hot. I was relieved actually I was worried I had planted the seeds too deep and they were just rotting, but if this ones sprouted hopefully the others will follow over the next couple of days.
Today I also sowed some tomato seeds as we have some grow bags to fill, I've sown 2 varieties "Tumbling Tom" a dwarf variety you can grow in containers or hanging baskets or even indoors, and an outdoor one called "Gardeners Delight." hopefully they will start sprouting after about 7 days. I know it's only early but I'm going to keep the plants indoors until the weather clears up. What have you sown so far? or what are you planning to sow soon?
| | Are you planning to grow your own vegetables this year? | | With the credit crunch making us all need to tighten our purse strings it seems like a good idea to grow some of our own vegetables this year. Last year I grew Chilli's and they were very successful and tonight I've been looking on Ebay at what seeds are on offer. There are loads of variety's of chilli's on there I'm going to get some called satan's kiss that sound great and are an unusual shape and some jalepeno's. I've also seen some great tomato seeds you grow in hanging baskets that give loads of fruit and some really big pumpkins. Also some purple cauliflowers similar to the ones I saw Jamie Oliver cooking and purple carrots.
I'm not sure I'll have room to grow all of those plants but I'm going to try anyway I can always give some plants away. Do you have any vegetables planned for your garden or containers?

| My gardening stories...share yours too! | | Mangoes, Tomatoes, Petunias and MumsHere's my mango plant today. As you can see, the leaves are already green and upright. It looks like it's well on it's way to becoming a big happy plant. I hope it has totally put the experience of being attacked by cats behind it. Yey! Of course, that's still a 10% success rate for me, but hey, I'll take it. As long as this one grows up to become a super mango tree.As for my attempts to graft a mango stem into our big old mango tree, well there are no updates yet. The stem is still green, but no new leaves have grown. It's a wait and see. My tomato seeds provide a different story. I will show you before and after photos: one dated Feb 20 and the other dated Feb 21. So tell me how that happens! One day, there's barely a white root showing (so small my low tech camera can't focus!); the next day little tomato sprouts were shooting all over my little recycled yogurt (strawberry flavor) cup. What sort of plant grows over an inch in a day?!;-) Within this week, I will be transferring them to my newly purchased plant bed (yes, the one I bought on Valentines). Hopefully, they grow up to bear big red tomatoes. Wait and see...My red and... | |
| | I did it, and they said it couldn't be done! | | A few weeks ago I planted my tomato seeds and they are growing well. At about the same time, I planted a few rhubarb seeds that I harvested from my neighbor's plant last fall. Several people told me I wouldn't be able to start rhubarb from a seed but I have a nice little plant growing now. I know I won't get any harvest from it for a couple years, but I am very proud of myself. | |

| How many people are going to start a garden this spring? | | I decided back in November I was going to start a small container garden, and I'm waiting on some free seeds to come in the mail, lettuce and tomato. Campbell's soup is giving away tomato seeds on their website-I don't know what variety they are, but for my sake I hope they're early, as the growing season where I live is really short, lol. | |
| | does eating tomatoes with the seeds cause appendicitis? is this ture? | | during the teen years of my mom she was rushed to the hospital and under went as operation, sue to the blocking of the appendix with feces, foreign objects and rarely tumor.
when i was growing she always reminds me to remove tomato seeds before eating it. she told me that the doctor told her about removing the seeds of tomatoes before eating it. whether it is raw or cooked. now that i am an adult i no longer do that. because i see mostly of good cooks on tv and they do not take of the seeds of the tomatoes. they eat it and served it as is.
do you have any knowledge about this?
