| Growing with Artificial Light | | I have started my seeds. Yes, early but I think Spring is going to be here a lot more sooner than we think.
This year I am using a bench with grow lights but I am unsure how long to leave the lights on. I have been leaving them on from 7a.m. to 7p.m. Is that too long? I can't recall the hours that I used a few years back.
In any case, my tropical plants seem to love it, a lot.
I don't have a bench warmer, yet, so to heat the flats from the bottom but will be adding in the next couple of weeks.
Any words of advice, growing with artificial lights?
I am using it mostly to start the seeds and help the seedlings along.
Distance is a no brainer. I am more concerned about the hours.
I recall depending on what you want to do, determines the hours of light vs darkness.
Will enjoy reading all responses for sure and thank you in advance.
| | I'm Nuts about My New AeroGarden Planter | | This is an item I first saw on an ad here on myLot, and although it took a while for me to actually make up my mind to buy it, I knew from the first glance I had to get one eventually. Well, we like it so much we have already ordered a second one and I have been going nuts taking photos and bragging it up on my blog. The AeroGarden by AeroGrow is a computerized hydroponic garden appliance of sorts, but instead of using water in place of dirt, the device mists the roots which live in air out of site inside the base of the unit. It looks very much like a lamp and does indeed have very bright grow lights, which fortunately shut themselves off at night or we would not be able to sleep.
We haven't had it long enough to give a reliable review, but I can say that the first seeds sprouted and little green leaves were visible the very next day, and that the photo below shows seedlings less than 6 days old. What is your impression of this sort of toy? Do you think I will really be able to grow cucumbers and tomatoes in my kitchen? How about eggplants? I want to put roses in one of them!
Any other suggestions?

| Someone must know how I can learn to build LED lights... | | I have looked all over the internet, I have found places that supply the parts. But I cannot find a book that teaches me how to put the parts together and make LED lights. Just a simple how to, that's all.
Can anyone in this big wide world help me learn how to do this?
| | Victory Gardens and avocado trees | | I vaguely remember hearing something about Victory Gardens -- a garden of fruits and vegetables that people planted may be in the depression of several years ago because money and food was scarce. I think this would be a great idea to start doing again. I know some people do not have land or room for a garden but I bet it could also be done, to some degree, using pots and may be grow lights. Also, does anyone know anything about growing avocado trees? I heard something about needs a male and female tree in order to bear fruit. Can you grow the trees from the avocado pits? How do you tell if it is a male or female pit? | |
